The Cotopaxi is an extinct volcano, and is the second highest summit in Ecuador,
standing at a height of 5,897m.
One of Ecuador's most solicited peaks among climbers.
This volcano is one of the few equatorial glaciers left in the world.
The peak is believed to have last erupted about 50 years ago, in 1940 or 1942.
This beautiful peak is a pride to the people of Riobamba just as is all its other surrounding volcanoes.
Every year dozens of tourists come from all over the world to try and climb this peak.
Travel agencies and many hotels in Riobamba provide experienced tour guides and trips to visit this volcano and other mountains in their vacation packages.
Assents usually begin as early as 12:30 am. By 7:30 am, the latest most groups should have reached the summit already and return to there huts or town before the snow starts to melt.
The volcano seems to not only have the power to attract a considerable amount of tourist each year. But to also inspire song writers and painters to create master pieces as beautiful as the peak itself!
Although I have been living in Riobamba for over 10 years I have never once climb a volcano or a mountain.
Strange right? I mean people from all over the world travel to Ecuador and Riobamba with the sole purpose to climb a volcano.
And I one the other hand haven't even thought about it! I always wonder what all the hype was about.
But then again let's not forget the famous saying: "why does a man climb a mountain? Because it's there!"
Let me tell you that I am starting to get the itch to climb one of Riobamba's surrounding volcanoes!
Hmm. Maybe I should put "climb a mountain" on my New Year's Resolution list.
What do you think?
